Hello!

I recently switched from a Raspberry Pi 4 to a Raspberry Pi 5 with the latest Raspbian Bookworm.
Since then I get I/O and UAS errors during drive usage.

I already posted my problem here, where you can see some more kernel logs. But it turned out that there is no problem if i plug the SSD directly into the USB 3.0 port, only if operating via the MEGA4 hub.

As mentioned there, the issue was basically already there on the Raspberry Pi 4 after starting and mounting a drive, but the new thing on the Raspberry Pi 5 is, that I/O and UAS errors also happen during runtime.
The UAS error/reset happens after a certain amount has been written or read. Then drive access is hanging until the reset has been finished.
If an I/O error occurs, I need to remount the device.

Is there a compatibility issue between MEGA4 and the Raspberry Pi 5?

Such kind of issue most probably is due to power supply. Have you connected supplemental power supply to the USB-C connector on MEGA4? If you are chaining multiple MEGA4s, each MEGA4 should have its supplemental power supply connected.

MEGA4 only follows USB standards. If there is indeed a compatibility issue with Raspberry Pi 5, then the issue should be fixed on Raspberry Pi 5 side (maybe in the USB driver). But as I said, this issue most probably is due to power supply. If you could not reproduce such kind of issue with a small USB flash drive, then it is almost certain to be a power issue.

Yes, both MEGA4s are powered by an official Raspberry Pi 15.3W power supply and the Raspberry Pi 5 is powered by the new 27W power supply.
All ports are turned off except for one. Can it be a power issue then?
I'll try it with a flash drive and report back.

I tried two different flash drives, but they both don't use/support UAS, so there will clearly be no UAS error.

Another strange thing: I just noticed that the HDD at port 2 of the second MEGA4 is spinning although the port is turned off. ??

Is it normal that the blue and white LEDS next to each port light up even when the ports are turned off?

Another thing I noticed: When plugging in the MEGA4s I get following logs:

"usb 1-1" and "usb 1-1.4" are mentioned as USB2.0 Hub, "usb 2-1" and "usb 2-1.4" as USB3.0 Hub.

However, the mega4 script shows "1-1" and "1-1.4":

Is it normal that the blue and white LEDS next to each port light up even when the ports are turned off?

This is not normal. The blue and white LEDs should be off, when the port is turned off. If it is not the case, it is possible that the Linux kernel managed to turn it back on. In such case you may try to increase the value of repeating (current value is 200).

When a MEGA4 is connected to a Raspberry Pi, it will be recognized as a pair of hubs, one for USB2 and one for USB3. They are mapped to the same physical device, but on software level we need to manipulate both. MEGA4's software displays only the USB2.0 port, that is normal.

Thanks for your reply.
I did another test. I turned all ports off via the mega4 script at 12:21. Then, about 20 minutes later, the LEDs started turning on one by one and I got following logs:

I increased the value of repeating to 400 (but I think this would only help if the ports didn't turn off in the first place). Exactly the same thing happened (turned off at 12:49, turning back on began at 13:10).

However, port 2 of hub 1-1 and port 3 of hub 1-1.4 stayed off. But maybe they would come later.

I could not reproduce such issue. I have turned off all ports for more than an hour and none of them come back automatically.

OK, the resons for the automatic turn-on seems to be that I installed smartmontools yesterday to check if there's a drive fault. Maybe there's a regular SMART check that turns the ports on. But why are the ports still detected as OFF by the script?
Anyway, the auto-turn-on thing has nothing to do with the initial problem in this case. Sorry for that. I uninstalled smartmontools and it didn't turn on anymore.

But the UAS problem is still there, even when all ports are off except for that one.

Could the "stat urb: status -71" or "cmd cmplt err -71" errors be a hint. Do they have a specific meaning?

A short update:

cmd cmplt err -71
The cmd cmplt err -71 error, that occurs after turning on and mounting, only occurs, if I want to mount the partition before the drive has fully started. After turning a port on, it takes about 10-20 seconds until the drive is ready (and the kernel log appears). Before, also the mega4 script just shows "ON" instead of "*ON".
If I mount afterwards there are no errors. So, the cmd cmplt err -71 error seems to be not relevant.

UAS errors
If I copy a few gigabytes (4000 photos) onto the drive via Samba, the copy process is hanging approx. after every gigabyte for about 10-20 seconds. Then, such an UAS error block with a UAS reset appears in the kernel log and the copy process continues (for the next GB):

The stat urb: status -71 error appears only from time to time, mostly in connection with the UAS problem, but I can't see a pattern for that one.

However, the UAS problem does not occur with every drive. It happens with my Samsung Portable SSD T5 2TB, but there was no error during the test with my Samsung SSD 860 EVO 4TB (with SATA-USB adapter).
But if I plug in the T5 SSD directly into the Raspberry Pi 5 I also get no errors. I even use another T5 SSD as root drive (instead of an SD card) without any problems.

What could be the reason if there's no problem when plugged in directly?

@matthias-meusburger this is out of my knowledge. If I have to guess, maybe the specific SSD is not well compatible with the VL817 chip on MEGA4. However if it is the case, I am afraid we can not do much. Via Labs is very big company and it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to let them troubleshoot such a specific issue.

UAS/USAP does bring some performance benefit, but if it doesn't work, maybe you would consider disabling it instead? https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=339591

OK, thank you.

It's just strange that there were no such problems before with the Raspberry Pi 4.
One other thing that is different now is that the MEGA4 is no longer directly connected via the bridge, but with a USB3.0 extension cable, because of the new RPi5 case.
I will try a different cable. Unlikely, but maybe that's the reason.
